TFL Joining Spree

Posted by Senior Staff [5:33 am] (link)

This is a update of fun and games for the General category.

Since fanlistings often wind up closing and re-opening with new owners at some point, one of our staffers, Todd, has organized a fanlistings ‘Joining Spree’ at our message board. It’s become a fun activity for many of the members, so for those who don’t visit the board often or haven’t registered at our message board, we decided to post the information here on the updates blog, as well, so that everyone will have a chance to get involved!

The Joining Spree is already a few weeks underway, so this post will include the categories that have been a part of it so far and then from now on, we’ll be making a weekly post (either on Sundays or Mondays) with the category or categories participating for that particular week.

Here is a portion of Todd’s original post announcing the event:

Welcome to the 2015 TFL Joining Spree! In the coming weeks and months, we hope to lead you through a combing of the entire fanlistings network, and motivate you to not only join fanlistings, but to clean up your joined pages! We will go through 1-3 categories a week, depending on the size of the categories, and each week you will be asked to join fanlistings in those categories, and clean up those categories in your joined sections! This will include removing any dead links for closed fanlistings you still have linked, and updating links for any fanlistings you have joined that have moved. Because categories will be divided by size, we will not be going through the network’s categories in alphabetical order. Please do not assume next week’s category is the next one on the list alphabetically.

To participate, simply check out this post each week to see which category or categories we have featured, and get to work joining and cleaning up!

Let’s get to joining fanlistings!

Here are the categories that have been covered so far, so please take this week to join the fanlistings for subjects in the following categories that you are a fan of! (If you don’t have a chance to join everything in one week, we’ll be doing ‘Catch-Up’ weeks later on.)

Movies (Current week)
Actresses (Week 4)
Actors (Week 3)
Animals, Nature (Week 2)
Academia, Arts and Design, Calendar Events (Week 1)

Happy joining!

Animated GIFS and other images

Posted by Senior Staff [8:51 pm] (link)

This is a update of for the General category.

We ask that fanlisting owners keep in mind visitors with Epilepsy and other conditions, when designing their fanlistings. Some animated gifs, as well as certain types of other images, can be a trigger for those who are epileptic, etc., which has the possibility of being life threatening, for some seizure patients, so please refrain from including the following on your fanlistings: Fast moving or questionable images, such as spatial-contrast patterns (high contrast and dark bars),’dartboard’ sectored or ‘whirling wheel’ type imagery.

TFL is back!

Posted by Senior Staff [11:39 am] (link)

This is a update of for the General category.

Welcome back!

We are very happy to announce that the TFL Network is finally back up and running! Due to a series of unfortunate events, the hiatus took longer than expected, and we are really glad that the date of reopening is finally here. 🙂 We want to thank everyone for their patience and we really appreciate all those who contacted us to check how we were doing and offered their help.

Starting today, the network will be working normally with the exception of Troubles and Overdue. These updates won’t start until after March 1st, in order to give everybody a bit of time to update and finish their fanlistings. Approvals and F/U/C updates will resume normally, so you can start sending your forms for that.

If you have any questions regarding any forms you sent before the hiatus, you can ask the category staffer in the Category Questions and Discussion Board or using a form. The same way, any question addressed to the Senior Staff can be sent through a form, emailing us at seniorstaff@thefanlistings.org or in the Questions for the Senior Staff board.

In case you didn’t know, the message board has been back for a few months now. You will need to rejoin and be approved by the Senior Staff to visit it and start posting. We look forward to seeing you there!

Script: vs.hive

Posted by Senior Staff [12:06 pm] (link)

This is a update of for the General category.

It has come to our attention an issue with the vs.hive script, used by some owners to run their fanlistings.

We have noticed that there are installations of this script that change the last update date to the current date if the fanlisting has gone over two months without being updated, making the fanlisting being permanently “updated”, when it’s, in fact, the opposite.

While we are not sure that every fanlisting using this script is benefiting from this, we have proof enough to know that a standard installation presents this issue, so for now we are asking owners who are using vs.hive to add a manual update date to their fanlistings, remembering to post it above the script one, as per current rules.

Temporary Layouts: Reminder

Posted by Senior Staff [12:14 pm] (link)

This is a update of for the General category.

This is just a reminder that starting today, March 19th, the new rule about temporary layouts is active. While temporary layouts have been allowed for a while, from now on owners will get a three-month period to finish them.

Information regarding this has been added to the rules and faq page. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the Senior Staff (seniorstaff@thefanlistings.org) or visit the board.

Temporary Layouts

Posted by Senior Staff [12:13 pm] (link)

This is a update of for the General category.

We are currently working to implement a new rule regarding temporary layouts in the near future. In the meantime, we want to give some time to the owners of those fanlistings that still sport temporary layouts, so they can finish them up before the new rule becomes active.

You have until March 18th to submit an update form, using the comments box to let the staffer know that your layout is now finished.

March 18th is the last day to do this. After that date, any fanlistings with temporary layouts will be troubled. New fanlistings with temporary layouts will be allowed, but these fanlistings will be monitored as follows:

– After you submit your finished form for a fanlisting with a temporary layout, you will have 3 months to finish your layout and contact us about it, so we can unmark your fanlisting as having a temporary layout.

– If 3 months go by and your layout is still the temporary one, your fanlisting will be placed on Overdue status after which, as per the regular Overdue rules, you’ll have one week to finish it up and contact us.

These rules are not active yet and can be subject to final modifications, but the main idea is giving the owners a 3-month period to finish their layouts if necessary. Please notice, that this refers to layouts only, not an extension to finish your fanlisting. You need to submit a finished form with a fully functional fanlisting (minus the layout) for this rule to be applicable to you.

Use of donated layouts

Posted by Senior Staff [12:10 pm] (link)

This is a update of for the General category.

We have decided to implement a new factor to be taken into consideration when approving fanlistings: making your own layouts. This will work as a complement to the “Your HTML example must be your own work”.

Staffers will also be taking a look to your other fanlistings (if applicable) to avoid situations in which your only own work is the example you submit, while donated layouts are being used for the rest of your sites. The same way how you take care of your fanlistings is taken into account, how much effort you put into building them will now also be an additional factor in the decision.

Reminder: Inactivity/Last update date

Posted by Senior Staff [12:06 pm] (link)

This is a update of for the General category.

This is just a reminder of the following policy regarding Inactivity and multiple Last Update Dates that was implemented in June.

Please refrain from using more than ONE ‘Last Update’ date on your fanlistings. Category Staffers and Trouble Checkers are no longer required to check or scroll the rest of the page in search of another date, so we will only go by the first date listed on the page when we check to see if a fanlisting is still active.

Below is a copy of the original post:

We have made a change to our ‘Inactivity’ troubles emails. Before, the emails informed fanlisting owners that they needed to post the following message on their fanlisting if there were no pending members to be added to the fanlisting:

[Month] [Day], [Year]
No new members have joined recently!

Since multiple update dates on a fanlisting can be a hassle for trouble checkers, category staffers and visitors to read through, we have removed that part of the troubles email. From now on, please refrain from showing more than ONE update date on your fanlisting, as we will only go by the first date listed on the main page of the fanlisting and trouble checkers and category staffers will no longer be required to check or scroll the rest of the page to look for a second last update date.

If you maintain your fanlisting with a script, you may simply select a current member of the fanlisting (if you joined your fanlisting you can choose yourself) and ‘update’ their information. This will bring the last update date current.

If you maintain your fanlisting without any script, you can just update the last update date manually.

Please keep in mind that you may only do this if there are no pending members to be added and no update forms to be processed. If a member has requested to be removed from the fanlisting, deleting them may not automatically update your last update date if you use a script and you will need to follow the same step listed above.
