Listed below are detailed explanations about the category rules and other helpful notes.

TV/Movie/Book Miscellany Rules

QUOTE
All 'Commercials', 'Trailers of', and 'Television Channels' fanlistings have been moved to a new category, Advertising/TV Channels. Please direct all applications/forms and questions you may have about these fanlistings to that category.
This one should be simple enough. All trailers/commercials/advertising-related fanlistings now belong in their own category called Advertising/TV Channels.

QUOTE
This category is for items that absolutely cannot be listed in any other category. Therefore, there will be no more cross-listing between this and other categories.

Cross-listing leads to not only big messes, but confusion and anger among users. Since this category was created to have a place for items/objects that did not fit in other categories, it doesn't make sense to cross-list these subjects.

QUOTE
People, Races, Teams, Animals, and everything else alive or with a personality go into the Characters: Book/Movie, or Characters: TV category. Versions of characters are not accepted. Personality traits, physical traits, and powers are considered part of the character, and are not accepted.
Anything with a personality is considered a character, and would therefore belong in the Characters: TV/Characters: Book/Movie categories. Hair, eyes, and other traits/body parts of a character are considered a part of the character itself.

QUOTE
Animated and Anime/Manga items belong in those specific categories.

The Animation category has a TV/Movie/Book Miscellany subcategory, so all animation objects/things belong in that category.

QUOTE
Fictional places, cities, buildings, etc. are accepted. If the setting of a particular series or movie is also a real-life city or place, then apply for the real place in Places. Rooms and parts of buildings are considered on a case-by-case basis and must have a particular importance to the series to be considered.
The White House is the White House, whether President Bush or President Bartlet is in it. The O.C. is still the same place, whether on-screen or in real-life. So it makes no sense to have two separate fanlistings for these things - this is why real places will now be directed to the Places category. Fictional buildings, rooms, etc. that exist within real places -- such as Platform 9 3/4 -- will be accepted in this category. As for rooms and parts of buildings - it has to have some real significance.

QUOTE
Items will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If an item has a name, a special history or role unlike others of its kind in the same series, or other distinguishing characteristic then it qualifies. Normal items such as swords, wands, etc. will only be accepted on a general basis. A certain wand owned by a certain character would be approved, if it has real significance. For example: Draco's wand is no different than Hermione's wand, but Harry's wand is a unique/significant wand. If you're curious, apply and ask and be prepared to submit evidence as to why this item qualifies. If I don't know what it is and why it's special, I can't approve it.

This is very similar to the above. You need to tell me why the subject/item is significant. What makes it special? If it has its own special name, then that's a pretty good indication. Narsil, Glamdrang, Sting, and Guthwine are all named swords in Lord of the Rings, so you can bet they're important. While I'm sure Eowyn loves her sword too, it doesn't have a name and probably isn't overly special save for the fact that it belongs to Eowyn.

Cher's shoe collection in Clueless is surely impressive, but they're just shoes and therefore don't warrant a fanlisting. However, Dorothy's ruby slippers in the Wizard of Oz have special significance.

QUOTE
Specific scenes and sequences from films, TV shows, or books are not accepted. Chapters of books or DVDs are not accepted. Special events with significance to the movie, book, or series are accepted, but everyday events are not. Fights between two people, dances, kisses, and the like are not considered events. However, if a dance takes place at an event, like a ball, you can apply for the ball. General themes like fight choreography of a movie or show are usually accepted.
How is your event special to the series? Is it unique? Is it something that doesn't happen to anyone else? Fight scenes, dances, sex scenes, and the like are not accepted. If the dance takes place at a prom, for instance, apply for the prom. If a fight takes place in an arena, apply for the arena as a place. We also accept a general 'Fights of' of a particular film, since in some films this is an integral part. There is a lot of room for interpretation in this, but use the prior guidelines for other types of fanlistings as an idea.

QUOTE
'Posters of', or any other promotional-type materials are not able to be applied for separately. You may apply for "Promotional Materials" of a particular TV show, movie, or book and it will encompass all of those things.

This should be self-explanatory.

QUOTE
Subjects that are no longer approvable include: Wardrobe: [Person A] and Kisses: [Person A / Person B]

These subjects are no longer approvable, due to overlapping and other rules that have since come into place. Fanlistings with these subjects that are currently listed in this category were approved before this rule was active, but will not be open for application if they are ever removed from the network.

QUOTE
Please give some information on the topic you are applying for and what significance it has in the TV show, movie, or book it is from.

This is one of the most important rules in this category. I cannot always use Google to research your topic, and really, I shouldn't have to. It is your responsibility to explain to me what the subject is, what it is used for, and why it is important to the TV show, movie, or book it is from.

Tips for getting your forms processed quickly
  • Be sure to check the upcoming/current fanlistings in the category for the subject you want to apply for before applying.
  • As with every category, always list your name, a working e-mail address that you check often, and a working URL.
  • State the TV show, movie, or book that your topic is from, as I won't always know.
  • Always include information on the topic you are applying for and why it is significant. This is one of the most important steps in getting your forms processed quickly. Assume I know nothing about the TV show, movie, or book, and be sure to include everything that is relevant, leaving me with no questions about your topic.
  • When submitting a finished, update info, or closed form, make sure you use the name and email address you used to apply for the fanlisting. It helps to keep your approval emails for this.
Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you follow these simple (?) rules and tips, I will be a very happy staffer, and you will be a very happy TFL visitor.

As always, if you have any questions, comments, or complaints about these rules and/or this category, please don't hesitate to send them in. I will do my best to answer your questions and concerns.

Thank you,

Kim H
